Heated Sample Line

Leanne Mitchell • February 3, 2026

A heated sample line is a type of pipeline or tubing used to transfer a sample of a fluid, typically a gas or liquid, from one location to another. The sample line is heated to maintain the temperature of the fluid sample and prevent it from condensing or cooling during transport. This is important because changes in temperature can affect the physical and chemical properties of the fluid sample, leading to inaccuracies in analysis or measurement.

Heated sample lines are commonly used in applications such as gas chromatography, process control, and quality control. They can be made from various materials, including stainless steel, PTFE, and other corrosion-resistant materials, depending on the chemical compatibility of the fluid sample.

The heating source for a heated sample line can be electrical, steam, or hot oil, and the temperature control can be accomplished through a thermocouple, temperature controller, or other temperature-sensing device. The specific design of a heated sample line will depend on the type of fluid, the temperature range, and the pressure requirements of the application.

Heated sample lines are typically designed to maintain a constant temperature along the length of the line to ensure consistent and accurate sample transport. They are often used in conjunction with other components such as regulators, filters, and sample probes to ensure the quality and integrity of the fluid sample.
